Marketing Mistakes and How to Fix Them – Christopher Page: Website & Marketing Strategist

8 Dangerous Marketing Mistakes and How to Fix Them

Sometimes it helps to have a list of items to check your business health. This is what doctors do for your personal health, so why wouldn’t you take a similar approach with your business? The list below will help you grow your business by focusing on 10 dangerous mistakes you could be making. Pick one this week and put a plan in place so you can start seeing your business grow!

1. Trusting word of mouth advertising to grow your business

Is word of mouth advertising enough to run your business each month, on top of existing customers? It’s probably not enough to get your business where you’d like it to be. Yes, word of mouth advertising is critical for building great reviews and trust for your business (potential customers will look for peer reviews to learn about you), but it shouldn’t be used as the main method of growing your business. This is great for long term growth and brand credibility, but shouldn’t be relied upon as heavily as it is.

2. Using marketing methods where you can’t see the ROI

Would you be okay with investing money at the bank without seeing the return on your investment? I wouldn’t be! You should be able to clearly see the ROI you’re getting from your marketing efforts. If you’re putting time into social media posting, but unable to see how many new customers you’re getting-is it actually effective, or just an activity to keep busy? Marketing/Advertising should be a predictable investment in your business to bring you customers and you should be able to see how many new customers (or at least prospective new customers) you’re getting.

3. No “entry” offer to get people in the door

Is your core/main service being used to get people in the door? If so, you aren’t reaching the maximum amount of people. You need to offer a variety of services, ranging from low to high cost, because not everyone is ready to purchase a higher priced service. Sure, some people are, but that’s a small percentage and you want to maximize the number of new customers. To do that, find a lower priced service, or make one of your favorite services a special price for first time customers only. This provides people an opportunity to test you out with very low risk. If you take the time to think about an offer that provides potential customers to try you out at a low cost, they’re much more likely to give you a chance. Once you’ve gotten the customer in the door and provided a wonderful experience, you can sell them on your higher priced services.

**Long term, make sure you have a ladder of increasingly priced services you offer to maximize revenue per customer.

4. Not collecting contact information

You should be collecting contact information from every single customer, period. Name, email, and phone number are all you need to successfully keep them updated about special offers and news. Make it about them-explain why they should want to be part of your email insider club. If they believe they’ll benefit from it, they’ll sign up.

When you have contact information for all your customers, you can market to them through email and grow your business with your existing customers. There’s also a way to upload this information to Facebook and find potential customers who have similar interests to your existing customer base.

What if I don’t have my email list/campaign set up? Not a problem! That can ALWAYS be set up later. Don’t miss out on the immediate opportunity to collect contact information when customers first visit.

5. Not telling your story

What makes you different from your competitors? If you aren’t actively positioning yourself to them, they’ll do it for you and you may not like it. Make sure your story is told throughout the customer experience, through your email sequence for new customers, and even in your store. What should you talk about in your story? Why you started, how you started, what keeps you going, and where you want to go. Your story will help separate you from your competitors in a positive light AND create a connection to your customer that can’t be replicated.

6. Website not clearing showing your services

Website health check! Are services easy to find in your main menu? Are your services written in terms your customers understand? Is it written in language that resonates with them? If not, you’re missing out on making your customers feel like you understand them where they are at and where they’d like to go. Ultimately, you’re helping them bridge the gap from a current need to an ideal resolution. The more you can fully understand their current and desired reality and structure your services, brand, website, language, and marketing to match that, the more your business will grow! Make sure your website uses language they’ll understand.

7. No social media plan

Before you join a new social media platform, have a plan for how often you’ll post, what your customers will want to see, and make sure you have the time to interact with them there and keep up with your posting. You should also focus heavily on creating a social media presence wherever your potential customers are spending their time. There’s no benefit trying to post on 6 different social media channels when most of your audience is only spending time on Facebook! It’s wasted effort.

8. No turnkey marketing system to generate clients on demand

What would life be like for you if you had a system in place that predictably brought you new clients every single month? A system that brought clients in shortly after turning the system on. Would you sleep through the night? Would you enjoy more time with your family? Would you be able to take more days off, confident you were running the business well?

A turnkey marketing system sounds like a pie-in-the-sky, unreachable thing, but it’s very real. Many of my clients are enjoying the benefits of a predictable stream of new customers every day. I’d love to help you experience the joy of a growing business!

Which one of these are you going to work on this week?
